Mount Zion, as we enter Black History Month in 2026, we do so with gratitude and reverence. We must remember, that our faith has always been intertwined with the pursuit of freedom, dignity, and justice. From the earliest Black churches formed in secret, to the powerful voices of Black leaders in the Civil Rights Movement, God has used this tradition to lift up truth and courage in the face of oppression.

We honor the saints who came before us—preachers, teachers, mothers of the church, deacons, musicians, and everyday believers—who held fast to the promises of God even when the world denied them justice. Their faith was not passive. It was a faith that marched, a faith that prayed, a faith that sang through suffering, and a faith that believed God would make a way. As God’s children we cherish the conviction that every person is created in the image of God and endowed with inherent worth.

This month theme is Young, Gifted and Black - to celebrate the contributions of young African Americans to the church, to our nation, and to the Kingdom of God. It also calls us to continue the work—because the work of justice, reconciliation, and love is not finished.

May this month remind us of the God who delivers, the Christ who liberates, and the Spirit who empowers. And may we, as a church, continue to stand boldly for truth, unity, and the dignity of all God’s children.
